We are proud of the strong aviation community that calls our airport home; Pilots, commercial operators, Air Cadets, enthusiasts, and dedicated volunteers who share a passion for flight.
We honour those whose commitment and vision have shaped the airport’s success, and we remain dedicated to supporting the next generation of aviators and partners who will carry that legacy forward.
Together, we are building a vibrant, sustainable aviation hub for our local communities and beyond.
HISTORY OF FLIGHT AT THE AIRPORT
Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport was originally constructed by the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan during the Second World War, working in conjunction with the nearby Dunnville airfield to support pilot training efforts.
Following the war, the airport transitioned to civilian use under various operators and became known as the Welland–Port Colborne Airport. By the late 1970s, operations had significantly declined, and the airport faced an uncertain future.
During this time, Welland attorney Geoffrey Brooks, QC, then Chair of the Airport Commission, reached out to H. Bruce MacRitchie a highly respected pilot, aviation entrepreneur, and former Vice President of Fleet Industries to help revitalize the facility.
Accepting the challenge, Mr. MacRitchie successfully operated the airport for more than 32 years, ushering in what many consider its “Golden Years.” Under his leadership, the airport became a hub of activity, featuring a thriving flight school, charter services, air ambulance operations, sightseeing flights, aircraft maintenance, and banner towing.
Today, Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport continues to operate under the governance of the Welland–Port Colborne Airport Act and remains committed to supporting aviation in the Niagara region.
VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS
The following groups are the heart of our airport. Without their volunteer support it is hard to imagine where our airport would be. The next time you’re around the airport give one of these people a salute or tip of the hat. After all, they are the reason you’re here.
87 Eagle Squadron
For decades, 87 Eagle Squadron Air Cadets have been an inspiring presence in the skies over Niagara. Their glider program offers a remarkable experience watching silent aircraft soar effortlessly on rising air currents is a testament to both skill and dedication.
Behind the scenes, an extraordinary commitment of time, training, and resources goes into preparing young cadets to safely operate gliders and, eventually, powered aircraft. The volunteers who make this possible year after year demonstrate exceptional dedication, helping shape confident, capable, and motivated young individuals.
Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport is proud of its long-standing partnership with 87 Eagle Squadron and remains committed to supporting their mission. Their work not only fosters the next generation of aviators but also instills valuable life skills, proving that for these young cadets, the sky truly is the limit.
We proudly salute 87 Eagle Squadron for their ongoing contributions and commitment.

PHILANTHROPY
H. BRUCE MACRITCHIE
Since 2003, Mr. MacRitchie has supported future aviation professionals by funding a scholarship for a deserving Aircraft Technician Program student at Centennial College, in memory of his brother Doug, who tragically passed away in a plane crash in 1980. In 2019, he made the largest individual contribution to Centennial College’s Aerospace and Aviation Program, donating over one million dollars in cash and aircraft. He has also generously contributed several restored WWII aircraft alongside his volunteer group to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Foundation, preserving aviation history for future generations.
DOROTHY RUNGELING
In 2022, Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport received a significant bequest from the estate of Dorothy Rungeling. While no specific conditions were outlined for its use, the Airport Commission has committed these funds toward ongoing improvements and strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening the airport’s long-term sustainability and growth.
