Dorothy Rungeling
Dorothy Rungeling was a pioneering Canadian aviator from Fenwick, Ontario, born in Hamilton on May 12, 1911. A true trailblazer, she inspired generations of women by excelling in a field that was largely male-dominated at the time. Beyond her achievements in the air, she was a dedicated community leader whose passion for flight and tireless advocacy helped shape and support the growth of Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport.
Her commitment to aviation, education, and community engagement left a lasting impact, and the airport’s naming in her honor recognizes her significant influence on aviation in the Niagara region.
In 2015, Niagara Central Airport was renamed the Niagara Central Dorothy Rungeling Airport in honour of Dorothy Rungeling, an award-winning pilot from Fenwick, Ontario. She advanced through multiple aviation certifications, competed in air races across North America, authored several books, and was awarded the Order of Canada in 2003. Dorothy passed away in 2018 at the age of 106, leaving a remarkable legacy in Canadian aviation.
